Pattern Overview

The Rose Garden Socks are top-down socks with a heel flap and a gusset. The square heel is reinforced with a slip-stitch pattern.

The design features twisted ribbing and an elegant cable on each leg.

The socks are knit with fingering-weight sock yarn.

Yarn

2 balls of Filcolana Arwetta in the color Madeira Rose (361) or approximately 100g of fingering-weight yarn.

Needles

A set of five 2.5mm (US 1.5) double-pointed needles.

Notions

Scissors, measuring tape, tapestry needle, sock blockers (optional).

Gauge

32sts x 44 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) in stockinette stitch using 2.5 mm (US1.5) needles.

Size

The socks are designed to be worn with approximately 10% negative ease. Choose your size based on your actual shoe size:

EU shoe size: 34-35, 36-37 (38-39, 40-41) 42-43.

US shoe size: 4-4.5, 5.5-6 (7-8, 8.5-9) 9.5-10.5.

UK shoe size: 2-2.5, 3.5-4.5 (5-6, 6.5-7.5) 8-9.

Abbreviations

1/1LC (1 over 1 Left Cross) – slip the next stitch onto a cable needle and hold in front, knit 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch from the cable needle.

1/1RC (1 over 1 Right Cross) – slip the next stitch onto a cable needle and hold in back, knit 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch from the cable needle.

k tbl – knit through back loop.

k – knit.

k2tog – knit 2 stitches together.

p – purl.

sl – slip st purlwise.

ssk – slip 2 stitches knitwise, knit these 2 stitches together through back loops.

st(s) – stitch.

wyib- with yarn in back.

wyif – with yarn in front.

Pattern Notes

Pattern: The socks have a mirrored design – the left sock has a cable on the left side of the sock, and the right sock has a cable on the right side of the sock, and instructions differ for the cuff and leg parts of the socks.

Cast on

Cast on 56 (60) 64 sts using the German twisted cast-on or the one you prefer. Divide the sts evenly over four needles: 14 (15) 16 sts on each needle.

RIGHT SOCK

Cuff

Round 1 : *k1 tbl, p1* to end.

Work in the established pattern for 4cm (1.5″).

Leg

Round 1: k16 (18) 20, p2, 1/1LC, k3, p2, k to end.

Round 2: k16 (18) 20, p2, k1, 1/1LC, k2, p2, k to end.

Round 3: k16 (18) 20, p2, k2, 1/1LC, k1, p2, k to end.

Round 4: k16 (18) 20, p2, k3, 1/1LC, p2, k to end.

Repeat rounds 1-4 30 more times (a total of 31 pattern repeats).

LEFT SOCK

Cuff

Round 1: *p1, k1 tbl* to end.

Work in the established pattern for 4cm (1.5″).

Leg

Round 1: k31 (33) 35, p2, 1/1RC, k3, p2, k to end.

Round 2: k31 (33) 35, p2, k1, 1/1RC, k2, p2, k to end.

Round 3: k31 (33) 35, p2, k2, 1/1RC, k1, p2, k to end.

Round 4: k31 (33) 35, p2, k3, 1/1RC, p2, k to end.

Repeat rounds 1-4 30 more times (a total of 31 pattern repeats).

BOTH LEGS

Heel Flap

The heel flap is worked over half of the total number of stitches in rows on needles 1 and 4. Needles 2 and 3 hold the instep sts.

Row 1: k14 (15) 16, turn.

Row 2: sl1 wyif, p27 (29) 31, turn.

Row 3: *sl1 wyib, k1* to end of the row, turn.

Row 4: sl1 wyif, p27 (29) 31, turn.

Repeat rows 3-4 12 (13) 14 more times. You will have worked a total of 28 (30) 32 rows.

Heel Turn

Row 1: sl1 wyib, k17 (18) 19, ssk, turn.

Row 2: sl1 wyif, p7 (8) 8, p2tog, turn.

Row 3: sl1 wyib, knit to 1 stitch before the gap, ssk, turn.

Row 4: sl1 wyif, purl to 1 stitch before the gap, p2tog, turn.

Repeat rows 3-4 until all sts have been worked. Turn. Knit all sts. You will have 10sts left.

Gusset

You will resume working in the round again.

Round 1: Pick up and knit 14 (15) 16 sts along one side of the heel flap and 1 stitch between the heel flap and the instep. Continue in the established pattern for the instep on needles 2 and 3. Pick up and knit 1 stitch between the instep and the heel flap and 14 (15) 16 sts along the other side of the heel flap. Use the same needle to knit half (5) of the heel sts. Place the other half (5) of the heel sts on needle 1. The beginning of the round is in the center of the heel sts.

Round 2: Knit to 2 sts before the instep, k2tog. Work the instep stitches in the established pattern. Ssk, knit to end.

Round 3: Knit all sts.

Repeat rounds 2-3 until you have the same number of sts on each needle again- 14 (15) 16 sts on each needle.

Work in the established pattern until the foot measures:

Size EU 34-35, US 4-4.5, UK 2-2.5: 16.5cm (6.5in).

Size EU 36-37, US 5.5-6, UK 3.5-4.5: 18cm (7in).

Size EU 38-39, US 7-8, UK 5-6: 19.5cm (7.6in).

Size EU 40-41, US 8.5-9, UK 6.5-7.5: 20.5cm (8in).

Size EU 42-43, US 9.5-10.5, UK 8-9: 22cm (8.7in).

Toe

Work decreases every other round:

Round 1: k to 3sts before the instep, k2tog, k2, ssk, k to 3sts before the end of the instep, k2tog, k2, ssk, k to end.

Round 2: k to end.

Repeat rounds 1-2 until 28 (30) 32 sts remain on the needles.

Work decreases every round:

Round 1: k to 3 sts before the instep, k2tog, k2, ssk, k to 3sts before the end of the instep, k2tog, k2, ssk, k to end.

Repeat round 1 until 12 sts remain on the needles. K3 heel sts.

Finishing

Cut the yarn, leaving a 20cm (8″) long tail. Sew the toe together using the Kitchener stitch. Weave in all loose ends.

Soak the socks in lukewarm water for 15 minutes, gently squeeze out the water, place the socks on blockers (optional), and lay them flat to dry on a towel.
