Pattern Overview

The Lost in Dunes Hat is a great everyday beanie. The folded brim is worked in 2×2 rib, and the body of the hat is knit in 1×1 rib.

The hat is knit in the round from the bottom up, so there are no seams.

The hat is knit with DK-weight merino wool.

The Long-tail tubular cast-on is used for this hat. This cast-on gives a rounded edge that is very stretchy and looks professional. Tubular cast-on takes more time and effort, but if you wish, you can use a standard Long-tail cast-on.

First, you will cast on the required number of stitches and join knitting in the round. Next, you will knit a long tube until you reach your desired length. Then you will work crown decreases. After that, you will thread a tapestry needle and draw the tail through the remaining stitches.

Cast on

Cast on stitches using the Long-tail tubular cast-on or the standard Long-tail cast-on.

Long-tail tubular cast-on

With 2.5mm (US 2.5) needles, cast on 104 (112) 120 stitches. The first stitch should be a knit stitch.

Work two rows flat:

Row 1: *k1 tbl, slip1 wyif* to end of row.

Row 2: *k1, slip1 wyif* to end of row.

Join in the round and rearrange sts for 2×2 rib: *k1, sl1 to cable needle and hold at back, k1, p1 from cable needle, p1* repeat to end. The beginning of the round is at the back of the hat.

Proceed to Brim.

Long-tail cast-on

With 3 mm (US4) needles, cast on 104 (112) 120 stitches using the Longtail cast-on. Place a stitch marker and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. The beginning of the round is at the back of the hat.

TIP: Turn your work to knit in the opposite direction, so that the right side of the cast-on will be visible when you fold the brim.

Brim

If you used the Long-tail tubular cast-on switch to 3mm needles.

Round 1: *k2, p2* to end.

Work in the established pattern until the brim measures 12 (13) 14cm/ 4.75 (5) 5.5″ from the cast-on edge.

Body

Round 1: *p1, k1* to end.

Work in the established pattern until the hat measures 21.5 (22) 22cm/ 8.5 (8.5) 8.5″ from the cast-on edge.

On the last round, place 8 stitch markers as follows: 12 (13) 14sts, pm, 1st, pm, *25 (27) 29 sts, pm, 1st, pm* 3 times, 13 (14) 15sts.

Round 2: work in pattern.
