Pattern Overview

The Winter Snowfall Hat is a ribbed beanie. It is knit in the round from the bottom up with DK weight merino wool. The hat is knit in 2×2 rib and has a folded brim.

The Long-tail tubular cast-on is used for this hat. This cast-on gives a rounded edge that is very stretchy and looks professional. Tubular cast-on takes more time and effort, but if you wish, you can use a standard Long-tail cast-on.

The crown decreases are done gradually.

First, you will cast on the required number of stitches and join knitting in the round. Next, you will knit a long tube until you reach your desired length. Then you will work the crown decreases. After that, you will thread a tapestry needle and draw the tail through the remaining stitches.

WINTER SNOWFALL HAT KNITTING PATTERN

Cast on stitches using the Long-tail tubular cast-on or the standard Long-tail cast-on.

Long-tail tubular cast-on

With 2.5mm (US 01) needles, cast on 112 stitches. The first stitch should be a knit stitch.

Work two rows flat:

Row 1: *k1 tbl, slip1 wyif* to end of row.

Row 2: *k1, slip1 wyif* to end of row.

Switch to 3mm (US 02) needles. Place a stitch marker and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. The beginning of the round is at the back of the hat.

Rearrange sts for 2×2 rib: *sl1 to cable needle and hold in front, p1, k1 from cable needle, k1, p1* repeat to end. As a result, the round begins and ends with one purl stitch, and there is 2×2 rib in between.

Proceed to Hat.

Long-tail cast-on

With 3mm (US 02) needles, cast on 112 stitches.

Place a stitch marker and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. The beginning of the round is at the back of the hat.

TIP: Turn your work to knit in the opposite direction, so that the right side of the cast-on will be visible when you fold the brim.

Hat

Round 1: *p1, k2, p1* to end.

Repeat round 1 until the hat measures 22cm/ 8.75″ from the cast-on edge.

On the last round, place 4 stitch markers as follows: 14 sts, marker, 28 sts, marker, 28 sts, marker, 28 sts, marker, 14 sts.

Crown shaping

Change to longer or double-pointed needles when necessary.

Round 1: *work in pattern to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, ssk* 4 times, work in pattern to end.

Round 2: work in pattern.

Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until there are 16 sts left.

Finishing

Cut the yarn, leaving a 15cm (6″) tail. Thread a tapestry needle and draw the tail through the remaining stitches, tighten. Weave in all loose ends.

Wet block the finished hat.
