Pattern Overview

The Riverbed Hat is knit in the round from the bottom up with two strands of yarn held together – DK-weight merino wool and mohair. Adding a strand of mohair creates a soft halo and makes the hat cozier and warmer.

The design features a simple cable rib stitch. The pattern is a 4-row repeat.

The crown decreases are done in the last 7 rounds, and the top of the hat has a gathered look.

The Long-tail tubular cast-on is used for this hat. This cast-on gives a rounded edge that is very stretchy and looks professional. Tubular cast-on takes more time and effort, but if you wish, you can use a standard Long-tail cast-on.

First, you will cast on the required number of stitches and join knitting in the round. Next, you will knit a long tube until you reach your desired length. Then you will work crown decreases. After that, you will thread a tapestry needle and draw the tail through the remaining stitches.

This hat is a great match for the Riverbed Scarf.Riverbed Hat knitting pattern

Cast-on

Cast on stitches using the Long-tail tubular cast-on or the standard Long-tail cast-on.

Long-tail tubular cast-on

With 3mm (US 02) needles, cast on 100 (104) 108 (112) 116 stitches. The first stitch should be a purl stitch.

Work two rows flat:

Row 1: *slip1 wyif, k1 tbl* to end of row.

Row 2: *slip1 wyif, k1* to end of row.

Place a stitch marker, join in the round, and rearrange sts for 2×2 rib: *p1, sl1 to cable needle and hold at front, p1, k1 from cable needle, k1* repeat to end.

Proceed to Brim.

Long-tail  cast-on

With 3.5mm (US 04) needles, cast on 100 (104) 108 (112) 116 stitches.

Place a stitch marker and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. The beginning of the round is at the back of the hat.

TIP: Join in the round using the invisible join method. Then turn your work to knit in the opposite direction, so that the right side of the cast-on will be visible when you fold the brim.

Brim

If you used the Long-tail tubular cast-on switch to 3.5mm (US 04) needles.

Round 1: *p2, k2* to end.

Repeat round 1 until the brim measures 12 (13) 13 (14) 14cm/ 4.75 (5.25) 5.25 (5.5) 5.5″.

Body

Switch to 4mm (US 06) needles.

Round 1: *p2, 1/1RC* to end.

Rounds 2-4: *p2, k2* to end.

Repeat rounds 1-4 until the hat measures 25 (26) 26 (27) 27cm/ 9.75 (10.25) 10.25 (10.75) 10.75″ from the cast-on edge.

Finish with round 2.

Crown

Change to longer or double-pointed needles when necessary.

Round 1: *p2tog, k2* to end (75, 78, 81, 84, 87 stitches left).

Round 2: *p1, k2* to end.

Round 3: *p1, k2tog* to end (50, 52, 54, 56, 58 stitches left).

Round 4: *p1, k 1* to end.

Round 5: k2tog to end (25, 26, 27, 28, 29 stitches left).

Round 6: k to end.

Round 7 (sizes XS, M, XL only): *k2tog* until 1st left, k1 (13, 14, 15 stitches left).

Round 7 (sizes S, L only): k2tog to end (13, 14 stitches left).

Finishing

Cut the yarn, leaving a 15cm (6″) tail. Thread a tapestry needle and draw the tail through the remaining stitches, tighten. Weave in all loose ends.

Wet block the finished hat.

When the hat has fully dried, fold the brim up 7.5 (8) 8 (8.5) 8.5cm/ 2.95 (3.15) 3.15 (3.25) 3.25″. The brim is designed to cover the first few rows of the pattern (approximately 1cm/0.5″), so when wearing the hat, the inner ribbing doesn’t peak out.
