Pattern Overview
The Basic Socks are simple top-down socks with a heel flap and a gusset. They are worked in stockinette stitch. The Dutch heel is reinforced with a slip-stitch pattern.
This simple pattern is perfect for those, who want to practice knitting socks.
Yarn
1 ball of Filcolana Arwetta in color 354 light truffle (fingering-weight, 80% virgin wool, 20% nylon).
Needles
A set of five 2.5mm (US 1.5) double-pointed needles.
Notions
Scissors, measuring tape, yarn needle, sock blockers (optional).
Gauge
32 sts x 44 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) in stockinette stitch using 2.5 mm (US1.5) needles.
Size
The socks are designed to be worn with approximately 10% negative ease. Choose your size based on your actual shoe size:
EU shoe size: 34-35, 36-37 (38-39, 40-41) 42-43.
US shoe size: 4-4.5, 5.5-6 (7-8, 8.5-9) 9.5-10.5.
UK shoe size: 2-2.5, 3.5-4.5 (5-6, 6.5-7.5) 8-9.
Abbreviations
k – knit.
p – purl.
st(s) – stitch.
k2tog – knit 2 stitches together.
ssk – slip 2 stitches knitwise, knit these 2 stitches together through back loops.
sl – slip st purlwise.
wyif – with yarn in front.
wyib- with yarn in back.

BASIC SOCKS KNITTING PATTERN
Cuff
Cast on 56 (60) 64 sts using the German twisted cast-on or the one you prefer. Divide the sts evenly over four needles: 14 (15) 16 sts on each needle.
Work in 1×1 rib stitch (K1, P1) for 2.5cm (1″).
Leg
Work in stockinette stitch (knit all sts) for 5cm (2.5″).
Heel Flap
The heel flap is worked back and forth in rows on needles 1 and 4. Needles 2 and 3 hold the instep sts.
Row 1: k14 (15) 16, turn.
Row 2: sl1 wyif, p27 (29) 31, turn.
Row 3: *sl1 wyib, k1* to end of the row, turn.
Row 4: sl1 wyif, p27 (29) 31, turn.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 12 (13) 14 more times. You will have worked a total of 28 (30) 32 rows.
Heel Turn
Row 1: sl1 wyib, k17 (18) 19, k2tog, turn.
Row 2: sl1 wyif, p7 (8) 8, p2tog, turn.
Row 3: sl1 wyib, knit to 1 stitch before the gap, k2tog, turn.
Row 4: sl1 wyif, purl to 1 stitch before the gap, p2tog, turn.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all sts have been worked. Turn. Knit all sts. You will have 10sts left.
Gusset
You will resume working in the round again.
Round 1: Pick up and knit 14 (15) 16 sts along one side of the heel flap and 1 stitch between the heel flap and the instep. Knit the instep stitches on needles 2 and 3. Pick up and knit 1 stitch between the instep and the heel flap and 14 (15) 16 sts along the other side of the heel flap. Use the same needle to knit half (5) of the heel sts. Place the other half (5) of the heel sts on needle 1. The beginning of the round is in the center of the heel sts.
Round 2: Knit to 2 sts before the instep, k2tog. Knit the instep sts. Ssk, knit to end.
Round 3: Knit all sts.
Repeat rounds 2 and 3 until you have the same number of sts on each needle again- 14 (15) 16 sts on each needle.
Foot
Work in stockinette stitch until the foot measures:
Size EU 34-35, US 4-4.5, UK 2-2.5: 16.5cm (6.5in).
Size EU 36-37, US 5.5-6, UK 3.5-4.5: 18cm (7in).
Size EU 38-39, US 7-8, UK 5-6: 19.5cm (7.6in).
Size EU 40-41, US 8.5-9, UK 6.5-7.5: 20.5cm (8in).
Size EU 42-43, US 9.5-10.5, UK 8-9: 22cm (8.7in).
Toe
Work decreases every other round:
Round 1: K to 3 sts before the instep, K2tog, K2, Ssk, K to 3sts before end of instep, K2tog, K2 Ssk, K to end
Round 2: K to end
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 28 (28) 32 (32) 36 sts remain on the needles.
Work decreases every round:
Round 1: K to 3 sts before the instep, K2tog, K2, Ssk, K to 3sts before end of instep, K2tog, K2 Ssk, K to end
Repeat round 1 until 12 sts remain on the needles. K3 heel sts.
Finishing
Cut the yarn, leaving a 20cm (8″) long tail. Sew the toe together using the Kitchener stitch. Weave in all loose ends.
Soak the socks in lukewarm water for 15 minutes, gently squeeze out the water, place the socks on blockers (optional), and lay them flat to dry on a towel.
