Pattern Overview
The Sandstone Cliff Hat is a great everyday hat. It is knit in the round from the bottom up with DK weight merino wool.
The hat features a 2×2 rib stitch and has a folded brim, that makes the hat warmer. The brim is also fixed in place by knitting a fold line, that tends to fold under the fabric.
I have used the Long-tail tubular cast-on for this hat. This cast-on gives a rounded edge, that is very stretchy and looks professional.
Tubular cast-on takes more time and effort, but if you wish, you can use a standard Long-tail cast-on.
The crown decreases are done in the last 5 rounds and the top of the hat has a gathered look.
First, you will cast on the required number of stitches and join knitting in the round. Next, you will knit a long tube until you reach your desired length. Then you will work crown decreases. After that you will thread a tapestry needle and draw the tail through the remaining stitches.
You might also like the Mountain Peak Hat knitting pattern. It is a similar pattern, but it is a more basic version.

To fit head circumference: 52-53 (54-55) 56-57 (58-59) 60-61cm / 20.5-21 (21.25-21.75) 22-22.5 (22.75-23.25) 23.5-24″.
Finished height: approximately 20.5 (21) 21 (21.5) 21.5cm/ 8 (8.25) 8.25 (8.5) 8.5″ with the brim folded up 6.5 (7) 7 (7.5) 7.5cm/ 2.5 (2.75) 2.75 (2.95) 2.95″.
Gauge
10x10cm/ 4x4in = 23sts x35rows in stockinette stitch after blocking.
Yarn
Drops Daisy in the color almond (mix 13), 2 balls.
Needles
2.5mm (US 01), 40cm (16″) circular knitting needles.
3mm (US 02), 40cm (16″) circular knitting needles.
3mm (US 02), 80cm (32″) circular knitting needles or DPNs for the crown decreases.
Notions
Stitch marker, tapestry needle, measuring tape, scissors.

This pattern uses Long-tail tubular cast-on. It is more complicated and time consuming, than the basic Long-tail cast-on, but it provides a professional looking edge. If you don’t want to use it, you can simply use the standard Long-tail cast-on or any other cast-on you prefer.
The hat has a fixed brim that holds in place, this is also optional.
Abbreviations
k – knit.
p – purl.
k2tog – knit 2 stitches together.
p2tog – purl 2 stitches together.
sl – slip stitch as if to purl with yarn in back.
* * – repeat the instructions in between the asterisks the number of times specified.

SANDSTONE CLIFF HAT KNITTING PATTERN
Cast-on
Cast on 108 (112) 116 (120) 124 stitches using the Long-tail tubular cast-on. You can also use the Long-tail cast-on if you prefer.
Long-tail tubular cast-on
With 2.5mm (US 01) needles cast on the required number of stitches using the Long-tail tubular cast-on. The first stitch should be a purl stitch, and the second stitch should be a knit stitch.
Place a stitch marker and join for working in the round, being very careful not to twist the stitches.
Round 1 and 2: *p1, sl1* to end.
Switch to 3mm (US 02) needles. At this step you will rearrange the order of stitches for 2×2 rib, so that you will have 2 purls followed by 2 knits.
Round 3: *p1, rearrange the following 2 sts: sl1 and leave at front of the work, p1, knit the slipped sts, k1* to end.
Proceed to Brim.
Long-tail cast-on
With 3mm (US 02) needles cast on the required number of stitches using the Long-tail cast-on.
Place a stitch marker and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
TIP: Turn your work to knit in the opposite direction, so that the right side of the cast-on will be visible, when you will fold the brim.
Brim
Round 1: *p2, k2* to end.
Work in the established pattern until the brim measures 6.5 (7) 7 (7.5) 7.5cm/ 2.5 (2.75) 2.75 (2.95) 2.95″.
Fold line
Round 1-3: *p2, sl2* to end.
TIP: Don’t tighten the strand behind the slipped stitches, otherwise the fold line will be too tight.
If you don’t want to knit the fold line, simply skip this step.
Body of the hat
Continue knitting 2×2 rib until the hat measures 25.5 (26.5) 26.5 (27.5) 27.5cm/ 10 (10.5) 10.5 (10.75) 10.75″ from the cast-on edge.
Crown shaping
Change to longer or double pointed needles when necessary.
All sizes
Round 1: *p2tog, k2tog* to end (54, 56, 58, 60, 62 stitches left).
Round 2: *p1, k1* to end.
Round 3: k2tog to end (27, 28, 29, 30, 31 stitches left).
Round 4: k to end.
Size XS, M, XL only
Round 5: k2tog to end, k1 (14, 15, 16 stitches left).
Size S, L only
Round 5: k2tog to end (14, 15 stitches left).
Finishing
Cut the yarn, leaving a 15cm (6″) tail. Thread a tapestry needle and draw the tail through the remaining stitches, tighten. Weave in all loose ends.
Wet block the finished hat.
